Storytelling and Theatre Work
The harp is the traditional instrument used for accompanying song and storytelling.
Harp music can be very atmospheric, and is useful for creating different moods during performances, from the celestial to the sinister!
There are also a number of sound effects that can be produced on the harp which are useful in story-telling and theatre-work:
Glissandi
This is where the strings are rapidly sounded in quick succession. By adjusting the pedals on the harp, glissandi can sound either ethereal or scary. Glissandi can also be played with a plectrum or with fingernails, to produce different effects.
Harmonics
This is where strings are made to sound at a higher pitch than is normal, producing an eerie tone.
Pdlt
This is where the strings are played close to the sound board, producing a sound similar to a guitar.
I am very happy to hear from directors and story-tellers who are interested in using live music during theatre performance and story-telling. Please feel free to ring me for an informal chat.
